It's her decision, but I hope she gives up playing while she can still walk. She's already probably looking at early knee replacement. I feel certain she would qualify for a medical scholarship.
I know she is helping the coaching staff some, keeping track of some things on the bench. On January 11, on her twitter page she posted " Just had my first staff meeting! " Good luck to her whatever she does.

I thought I heard someone, maybe one of the coaches, say somewhere that she is on schedule, or actually ahead of schedule and could graduate sometime in 2010 - don't know if that's spring, summer or fall. If that's true, that's amazing that she could do that in less than four years!

She has certainly had some bad luck with injuries, and seems like a good kid. Hope whatever she does, it works out for her!

Knowing Courtney, if she can walk she will play.

Someone I talked to (can't remember who) had a short conversation with her and she said she is definitely coming back.
I wish her well!

There are things more important than basketball. She has a lot of life to live after USC. She needs to talk to some people who have had several ACL surgeries to make an informed decision.

well, I agree--walking is important!
Then again, I'm over 50 and creak when I get out of a chair!
I was never a Division I athlete who assumes that my body will always answer the call...
It's hard to leave a team, especially one that seems to keep everyone (active or not) feeling like they're an important part of it, when you've invested so much. That's a big strength, since a lot of folks feel like they're completely separate from it if they're not on the floor.

I hope she gets enough information to make a good decision for herself--undoubtedly, she is already suspecting that her ultimate future is NOT in running up and down a basketball court.

Either way, she should graduate fairly easily and her grades will help the team average--

Maybe so, but the opportunity to play on a top team is something most people wouldn't pass up. When you're 80 years old and can say that you played on a final four team (or something like that) it would be pretty damn good thing to look back on.

Most definitely!! Very Happy

I feel sure that I'd stay on the team, in her place.

There is NO guarantee of a basketball future for ANY of them (tho it's a better bet if you can move/shoot like Val or have talent AND size like Kelsey) so they are playing for now and what they can accomplish--which makes perfect sense, especially when you're YOUNG

If she were my daughter I would do everything in my power to talk her out of playing. I've read some real horror stories about athletes that have had several ACL surgeries. People that have to take painkiller every day just to walk with a limp, knee replacement at an early age. I recommend the book "Warrior Girls" by Michael Sokolove.

I don't disagree at all. If she were my daughter, I'd do the same. I don't see her breaking into the starting lineup with the guards we have now, even with 2 years to do it. I think it would be very sensible and logical to quit playing.
But I doubt that is in Courtney's mind. She's young and competitive and is probably addicted to the sport, the team, the camaraderie. "Quit" is a dirty word and a foreign concept to many players...if it wasn't, losing teams would have to replace their players just about every season!

Hey, I don't want to see her walking with a cane 20 years from now, either! But I believe very strongly in personal choice (including wrong or bad choices) and it is up to her.

I'm sure that Courtney is hearing all the pro's and con's of returning. I'm sure she's talked with the doctors about her future. I'm also sure she's talked with Coach Staley about what her role would be if she comes back. If she were my daughter, I'd probably say the same thing; no way!! But I would also leave the decision up to her.
